在 Android 設備上看到 iOS 設備才有的 app？這多虧美國哥倫比亞大學 6 位資訊所研究生研發出來的軟體「Cider」。

Cider 這套作業系統相容架構，能夠讓不同平台的 App 在不必修改的情形下，於同一作業系統中運作，該團隊並實際運作影片放上 YouTube。

然而，該研究團隊表示，目前 Cider 仍只是一個雛形，還沒有計畫將其轉為商業化產品，且 Cider 仍有不少待改進處，例如 App 若使用到手機硬體，像是鏡頭、GPS、藍牙，通常仍不太能用，該團隊仍在修改中。

這個 6 人組成的研究強者表示，他們著手創造 Cider 是為了要突破智慧手機和平板電腦用戶被迫接受的界限，例如，Android 不能取得蘋果 iTunes 中的 app，而 iOS 設備用戶則不能使用 Flash 架構的內容。只要使用 Cider，就能讓各種設備用戶取得彼此平台才有的 app。

將一款為特定作業系統設計的 app，套到另一種作業系統上運作，這通常用到素稱虛擬化的技術。為了要避免虛擬化技術會產生的效能問題，該研究團隊採用一套不同的辦法，他們透過 Android 設備發出一串指令，並只變更與 iOS app 相關的指令，另外一個軟體助手則提供讓該 app 正常運作的一些特別數據。

該研究團隊上傳一片展示影片，他們在一台 Nexus 7 平板電腦上同時運作 iOS 和 Android app。
